Walk into any lash supply store and you'll see trays labelled 2D, 3D, 5D, 6D, 10D, and sometimes higher. For a new tech, it looks like alphabet soup. For an experienced one, each number represents a completely different outcome on the eye.

0.07mm
the go-to fibre diameter for 4D–6D volume work
= Classic
a 5D fan in 0.07mm weighs the same as one 0.15mm classic lash
2× rule
never use a diameter more than 2× the natural lash's own diameter

What does the "D" number actually mean?

The D stands for dimension, and the number tells you how many individual lash fibres are in each pre-formed fan. A 3D fan has three fibres. A 10D fan has ten. More fibres creates more surface area on the eye, which makes the set look fuller and darker — but more fibres also means more weight.

💡 This is why diameter matters so much with volume work. A 10D fan in 0.05mm fibres weighs significantly less than a 3D fan in 0.15mm fibres. The relationship between fan count and fibre diameter is everything.

2D fans — light volume for sensitive clients

Two-fibre fans are the lightest volume option available. They sit between classic and volume in terms of fullness, and they're excellent for clients with fine or sparse natural lashes. Use 0.10–0.12mm fibres for 2D work.

3D fans — the natural volume sweet spot

Three-fibre fans are the most beginner-friendly volume option and a go-to for clients who want a natural, full look. At 0.07mm, a 3D fan weighs roughly the same as a single 0.15mm classic lash — meaning there's no retention compromise when your technique is clean.

4D and 5D fans — the most popular range

This is where most working volume techs spend their time. Four and five-fibre fans create genuine fullness — the kind clients describe as "fluffy" — while remaining within a safe weight range when using 0.07mm fibres.

📌 A well-made 5D fan in 0.07mm weighs approximately the same as a 0.15mm classic lash. You can create a set that looks dramatically fuller than classic without any additional stress on the natural lash structure.

6D fans — dense and glamorous

Six-fibre fans push into genuinely dramatic territory. Stick to 0.07mm fibres maximum for 6D. Assess each client's natural lash strength before committing — fine, delicate naturals should cap at 4D regardless of what the client requests.

10D fans — mega volume and promade territory

Ten-fibre fans require 0.05mm fibres to keep weight within safe limits. For most technicians, promade 10D fans are the practical choice — consistent, fast, and reliable.

Which trays should you start with?

  • 0.07mm in C and D curl, lengths 9–14mm — your workhorse for 3D–5D handmade fans
  • Premade 3D or 5D in C or D curl, 9–13mm — for speed days and consistent fills
  • 0.10mm in C curl, lengths 8–12mm — for 2D work and lighter clients
  • 0.15mm in C and D curl, lengths 8–14mm — for classic sets alongside your volume work

🎯 Resist the urge to stock every dimension immediately. Master the 3D–5D range first, nail your retention, then expand. A tech who does flawless 4D fans will always outperform one who does inconsistent 10D fans.
